'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Wilcox hunting for new No.2

Daws had acted as number two to Wilcox since he replaced Brian Laws in November, with player-coach Andy Dawson and keeper coach Paul Musselwhite filling out his main support staff.

In a statement, Iron chairman Peter Swann said: 'Tony has had a fantastic year supporting Russ and the coaches, on their way to promotion and a discussion has taken place between the board, myself Tony and Russ.

'There was a huge temptation for Tony to become assistant manager, and who could blame him. After long discussions Tony has decided to continue his role within the youth set up, although of course his input into the first team is crucial for the future development of our young players and he will still be very much part of the first team set up.

'For me personally the Youth academy is very important to the future of the football club. I want to ensure that we develop and grow quality players through our system and enable players to fulfil their dreams of becoming a professional footballer.'

Dawson would be the obvious candidate to replace Daws as assistant, having returned to Glanford Park last summer to take his first steps into coaching - combining his role as a player with managing the reserve team.
