Brian Laws has declared himself delighted after seeing Scunthorpe beat Southend by a single goal to give us our second win of the season.
Summer signing Chris Iwelumo put his injury issues behind him to score the winner in the 64th minute and Laws told the press following the match that he felt it was a very satisfying win for the club, because he thought we managed the game very well, stuck to our gameplan effectively and ultimately the players did everything he had asked them to do.
Credit to Southend though, as he says they were pressing really quickly in the first half which led to us making mistakes and giving the ball away cheaply, but he was delighted with the improvement in the second half.
'The second half was a lot better after we had some words at half time about keeping hold of the ball and that's what we did. I thought McAllister was outstanding but the whole team was excellent. The team is progressing well and if this is a sign of things to come, then it's all very positive.'
Terry Hawkridge was also delighted following the game and he talked about how the team were resilient and showed tactical togetherness to ensure everybody was covered in case of mistakes, and that led to Southend having very few clear cut chances at all during the 90 minutes.
He spoke to the Official Site saying.
'I thought we got together well, we knew it's be a hard place to come even though they've lost three on the bounce. We were a bit slow coming out, but second half we worked together and we scored the goal that we needed.'
Singled out Sean McAllister, focused on the other positives in his after match interview, discussing the fact it was another clean sheet for the club, our third of the season and although he was delighted to have been named Man of the Match, he thinks the plaudits should go to Chris Iwelumo for doing exactly what he was brought in to do...score goals.
One downside from around the game is the injury to Andy Welsh who is now set to undergo surgery to determine the extent of the cartilage injury he picked up in training just ahead of the match on Thursday.
He was due to undergo the operation today to tidy the area and also to determine if it's worse than first thought, but Brian Laws has said he hopes it will be similar to Matty Godden's injury which only needed a clean up and then rest.
