Laws Sets Out Of Contract Deadline
The six players to be offered new contracts by Scunthorpe will be given a week to accept them by Brian Laws.
Laws knows their agents would've been working since January on potential other deals for them, and he doesn't want to be held up by a player who isn't 100% committed to the cause for the coming campaign.
Speaking to the Scunthorpe Telegraph about the futures of Jimmy Ryan, Michael Collins, Eddie Nolan, Tom Newey, Matt Godden and James Severn, Laws said.
'The one thing I've learned since I've been in football is that once you get past January, players who are out of contract start talking to other clubs. Agents will have been doing their work, as they have been when they've spoken to me since January. When it comes to players making their minds up, if they don't know now if there are any offers on the table then I'd be surprised. We will set a deadline.'
All Laws is waiting for is the chairmanship issue to be sorted, then he can sit down and decide on the offers that they will make, as all players will have to take a pay cut following our relegation, but he's not going to give them long to decide because he knows the work he has to do to get the squad how he wants it for next season.
Laws is mildly positive though because those mentioned have already expressed a desire to stay at the club, so once the offers are made at least the willingness issue has been dealt with. He also says the initial discussions were positive and he was pleased with the feedback he received.
But of course all that can change when it gets to the issue of finances.
