Wharton to move on

Steve Wharton, having confirmed the sacking of Alan Knill and the reappointment of Brian Laws, has also confirmed that he will be moving aside at the end of the season.

In a press conference to confirm the management situation (on Monday) the chairman also confirmed that he will be stepping aside in June: 'I have given the board assurances that I am here until the end of the financial year, which is next June.

'I have made it clear to Brian that I think it is time I retired. Then it will be up to whoever takes over.'

Wharton feels that the time, financially, is right for this move and hopes that someone that can offer up a little more in this area can takeover: 'We lost a substantial amount of money last year and will do so again this year. In any business you cannot continually do that year after year unless you have somebody prepared to come in and throw money at the situation.

'I have put a loan in place so that if I leave at the end of the year the club is financial sound. After that they have got to find a way of balancing the budget from then on.'

Sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do and if Wharton thinks this is the best move for him, and hopefully the club, you have to accept this.
