With Scott Matthews having been released by the club at the end of last season seeing his name included in the first-team squad list for this would have been a surprise for many!
This is exactly what has happened this week though with him handed a squad number and challenged to keep this.
Alan Knill, after further consultation with his youth coaches and reflection himself, has decided to invite the youngster back for pre-season training and as a further incentive for him to prove he's worthy of a full time contract Matthews has been given a squad number.
If Matthew's cannot prove himself worthy of a contract with this incentive in front of him then he never will and the decision to release him at the end of last summer would've been justified, if he does then Knill would've pulled off a masterstroke in giving him a second chance!
